Drinks-Lab Homebrew Kit

If you though homebrews were a thing of the past, or just for country bumpkins with too much time on their hands, think again! The Drinks Lab has just brought out a new homebrew kit (£9.99) that provides everything you need to turn juice into an alcoholic beverage.

Inside the box you’ll find four yeast sachets (enough to turn 4 litres of juice into alcohol), a special rubber stopper, airlock and drinks labels in case you forget just what it is you’ve concocted. The instructions are simple enough – add the yeast to any juice, place the bung and airlock into the bottle and leave for at least 24 hours.

The problem comes when you have to find a bottle with a wide enough top for the bung to fit. After some rooting around in the recycling I managed to pick out a milk bottle that would do the job. Yet, even if the packaging is slightly misleading with regard to the type of bottle that should be used, the results were in no way disappointing…

I opted for a good-quality apple juice, hoping with quality on my side the experiment couldn’t go too wrong. I was right – 24 hours later and I was enjoying a glass of decent (if a little yeasty) cider pre-formal.
